Indeed, it was 50 years ago on 21 July 1969, that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humansto step on the moon. Although Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong was the first to set foot upon theMoon, he left his 105.012 Speedmaster inside the lunar module as a backup, because the Lunar Model’selectronic timer had malfunctioned. Therefore, Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster became the first watch to beworn on the Moon.

Apollo 11 & OMEGA:
It was 50 years ago on 21 July 1969, that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to step on the moon.
Although Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong was the first to set foot upon the Moon, he left his 105.012 Speedmaster inside the lunar module as a backup, because the Lunar Model’s electronic timer had malfunctioned. Therefore, Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster became the first watch to be worn on the Moon.
The ingenious Speedmaster technology was vital for getting astronauts to the moon. While they were used throughout the early manned Apollo program, the manual winding Speedmaster Professional or “Moonwatch” is the best-known as “The First Watch Worn on the Moon.”
To commemorate that moment on the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 this year, Omega created 6,969 pieces of the Speedmaster and re-created a limited edition of 1,014 of the original 18 Karat gold editions of the Speedmaster, which were given by NASA to the first Astronauts, who went to the moon.
Actor George Clooney wore the limited edition of this 18-carat-gold Speedmaster or Moonwatch, as brand Ambassador at the Omega black-tie dinner commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, held on 9 May at the Kennedy Space Center under the Saturn V Rocket.
Today, mankind has entered into a NewSpace Age which opens space to all sectors and is set to propel mankind into the stars. Accordingly, with the newly announced Artemis programme, NASA will form a coalition of Nations, to not only form a base on the Moon by 2024, but also to return the next man and most importantly, to land the first woman on the moon. In our NewSpace Age, as we see the first woman land on the moon, and as a future Astronaut, I am looking forward to seeing Omega launch the First edition of a ladiesMoonwatch for the next generation of female astronauts who will rove on the lunar surface and beyond.
